This lecture will be given by Associate Professor Yoshinari Nishio from Tokyo University of the Arts, who is also an artist and was invited to participate in events of the London Olympics. His works use clothing and sewing as mediums to explore cultural and identity symbols, highlighting deep meanings in cross-cultural exchange.
In this lecture, Professor Nishio will share two of his creative projects initiated under the concept of "Fashion as a Community Museum": “Sewing Community” and “Pubrobe”.
The “Sewing Community” project encourages people to discover the "shapes" of their community through walking and to sew these shapes with clothes and threads, embodying the spirit of the local area in their creations. Meanwhile, the “Pubrobe” project, combining the meaning of "public" and "wardrobe", invites participants to bring their own wardrobes into the community to create a shared public closet space open to everyone.
Through Professor Nishio’s insights, we will explore how fashion could serve as a form of participatory art to foster interaction and connection with the community.
